CASTLE GREEN AFC |
Background:
In 2007, BS4 FC was
formed from a group of lads from the Totterdown/Knowle area who were part of the
youth club at Totterdown Baptist Church. After 3 seasons in the Bristol Churches
League, the team had evolved with most of the original players having left, the
majority of players coming from the Kingswood/Soundwell/Staple Hill areas and a
few players connected with Castle Green United Reformed Church, which had
recently merged with Mangotsfield URC to form Mangotsfield and Castle Green URC.
The sensible idea was for the club to switch churches, becoming Castle Green
AFC.
Castle Green can
trace it's footballing roots as far back as 1909, competing in the
Bristol Free Church League. Disbanding for the Great War, the club
restarted in 1920 and experienced mixed fortunes until 1939, competing
in the Bristol Suburban League, the Bristol Free Church League and the
Bristol and District League, often running a 1st XI and reserve team.
The highlight was being champions of the 4th Div of the Bristol and
District League in 1932/33.
After WWII, the
Club reformed around 1956, entering the Church of England League, which
was ironic given the Church’s 360 year non-conformist history!! Arguably
it's most successful period, the club won promotions almost back to back
(6 promotions in 8 seasons), culminating in promotion to the 1st
division in 1964. After 1968 however, the club fell into decline and
after the 1972/73 season, it disappeared without trace.
Now after a 37
year absence from local football, Castle Green rises again...
